It’s the fourth year that we have used this excellent venue, enjoyed delicious food provided by Bishop’s Cafe and had pre-release films that appealed to the most discerning!

09:30 The Bothersome Man (Den Brysoomme Mannen) (Norway 2006) Directed by Jens Lien. Language: Norwegian 95 mins
Andreas finds himself in a strange city with no idea how he got there. He is presented with an apartment, a job and even a wife. But all is not as it seems!

11:30 Dans Paris. (France 2006) Directed by Christoph Honor. Language: French 93 mins
Dumped by his girlfriend Paul moves in with his father and brother (Jonathan). Jonathan bets Paul he can get to Bon Marche in 30 minutes. His journey is repeatedly interrupted by a succession of women to whom he makes love. Meanwhile Paul mopes around the house, reflects upon suicide and laughs with his visiting mother. Finally the brothers are reunited and find warmth from the chill outside.
"A genuinely honest, unpretentious and delightful small film, alternatively sober and effervescent, steering clear of either heavy-going philosophising or dreaded whimsy." -Jay Weissberg, Variety.

14:00 Away from Her (Canada 2007) Directed by Sarah Polley Language: English. 109 mins
A man coping with the institutionalisation of his wife because of Alzheimer's disease faces an epiphany when she transfers her affection to another man. Julie Christie gives a brave and moving performance as Fiona, happily married for 50 years and devastatingly diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The film follows Fiona's husband's journey as he adjusts to the changes in their relationship.
"This is a quiet thoughtful film made with care but no moral judgements, and no easy answers." (ICO March 2007). The film had the highest reaction rating at the ICO Screening Day March 2007.

16:55 Golden Door (Nuovomondo) (Italy/Germany/France 2006) Directed by Emanuelle Crialese. Language: Italian and English 120 mins
Sicily at the beginning of the twentieth century. Salvatore, a poor widowed farmer, decides to emigrate to America with his two sons and old mother. Before they embark they meet Lucy who has a proposition for him.
"An imaginative, intelligent and attractive Italian film….Golden Door should find glittering prospects waiting on both local and offshore screens" Jay Weissberg (Variety).
