Act One, Scene One, Beginners please ...
30th November - 2nd December 2001 at Cober Hill Conference Centre, near Scarborough

The Conference Centre is two buildings: an old house with restaurant, lounges and study rooms - where we eat; and a modern block with comfortable en-suite bedroom rooms and a fine central screening room with adjacent kitchen for teas and coffees. Whisking a set of comfortable armchairs into the hall we started the event with ... 16mm film!  There were problems caused by local voltage fluctuations but for cine enthusiasts this was a moment to treasure.  Thereafter we were on the technically better but somehow soulless DVD and VHS sources via a good video projector.

The event dealt in movies with a theatrical background - not filmed plays or adapted classics.  They proved to be as fascinating a bunch as you could hope to find.  Most of the enthusiastic audience found some new gems and several much-loved classics in the programme. Tony Davidson and his team worked tirelessly to present the fascinating programme and the buzz of conversation over meals covered all aspects of cinema old and new.
