Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
We are about half a mile from the village of Knowbury down a narrow lane with passing
places, which is often muddy, but there is very little traffic. Parking is adjacent
on our own private gravel drive and there is ample room for all cars. The walk from
the car along the gravel and paved path leading to the front door is about 40m but
it is possible to park only 30m away for unloading. The front door has a 20 cm step.
We can assist guests with luggage. It is extremely dark here at night as there
are no street lamps anywhere around. We have security lights which should come on
when you park.
The House Layout
- The guest wing and dining-room are all on one level with a 17 cm step from outside
into the main guest bedroom via the French windows. There are no internal steps.
- The main guest bedroom (made up with either twin beds or a superking double) with
French windows into the garden has a door leading to a lobby and the bathroom. A
further door leads out of the main bedroom suite to a small hall leading to the front
door of the house and to the dining-room.
- Also off this hall is a further double bedroom which can be used by guests in the
main bedroom for one or two people in their own party: it is never let separately.
- Please see the plan of the accommodation.
- Guests are provided with keys to the front door, the French windows and the bedroom
windows and are responsible for shutting them. When we are out, access to the dining-room
and the main house isn’t possible.
- All doors are 74cm wide except the bathroom which is 65cm wide.
- Floors are either wood, tile or short pile carpet. There is a non-fitted carpet
in the dining-room, where breakfast is served.
- There are chairs both with arms and without which can be moved to accommodate a wheelchair
if required.
- Menus can be provided in large print by prior arrangement
- We do not play background music at any time.
Pets
- Assistance dogs and other friendly dogs belonging to guests are welcome, by arrangement
in advance.
- Dogs should sleep in the lobby by the bathroom or the small hall but not in the bedrooms.
- Visiting dogs must be kept under control around our poultry and get on well with
other dogs. Please do not bring dogs that are or maybe aggressive to other animals
or people as it is unfair to our resident pets.
- Our own pet dogs and cats are not permitted into the kitchen whilst we are preparing
food. However they do have access to the rest of the house, including the dining-room
but excluding the visitor wing, so we would not be suitable for anyone with a severe
dog or cat allergy.
- Both dogs are very friendly with everyone, including children and babies but they
are bouncy! If guests ask, we will do our best to ensure the dogs are kept away for
the duration of your stay.
- We also have free-ranging ducks, chickens and geese.
Bedrooms:
- Loose furniture can be moved on request
- Beds are 50cm high
- A television with remote control and teletext is available in one room, and without
teletext in the other – they can be moved if required.
- Each bedroom has two armchairs and there is one upright chair without arms in the
main bedroom as well.
- Free-standing towel rails are in each bedroom.
- Both bedrooms have fitted short pile carpet on the floor
- Cordless electric kettles and tea-trays are in both rooms.
- There are room lights operable from the doors and bedside lights.
- These are all fitted with energy-saving bulbs which may take a while to come fully
alight.
- There is central heating and an extra room heater for each bedroom.
Bathroom
- For layout, see plan.
- There is a loo, basin and bath with overbath shower, which is powered.
- There is not room for a wheelchair to the side of the loo which is 40cm high.
- The distance between the bath edge and the basin is 63cm.
- The bath edge is 56cm high with a handle on both sides of the bath.
- There is a glass screen on the edge of the bath around the shower end.
There is a fridge available for guest use, in a cupboard off the hall by the front
door, which can be used for medication/food and we can put larger items in our main
fridge or one of our freezers in the garage on request (not available 24hours).
Grounds and Gardens
We have five acres of land, including a large garden which is available to sit in
with benches and tables in several places, including just outside the guests’ French
windows. Dogs (and owners!) can use the fields for exercise but at some times of
the year they contain cattle or sheep. There is a large wildlife pond in one of
the fields - access involves steps and bridges. All the grounds can be muddy at
any time of the year. There is a walk of about 250m from the house up a field to
a small wood with a hide where visitors can watch badgers by their sett. The hide
is small with rear access and two camping stools to sit on. Taller visitors can
also stand behind the seats.
