Robin Hoods Bay

Robin Hood’s bay is probably one of the most picturesque fishing villages in the country and nestles in the dramatic and rugged scenery of the North Yorkshire coastline. “The Bay” lies 15 miles from Scarborough and 5 miles from the famous fishing town of Whitby from where you can also explore Heartbeat Country.

Robin Hood’s Bay marks the end of the Coast-to-Coast walk and is also on the route of the Cleveland Way long distance walk. The village is a network of steeply sloping cobbled streets, steps and alleyways and the ancient cottages are reminiscent of the time when the village was home to fishermen and their families.

The village also has a strong history of smuggling and secret routes can be found that were used by the smugglers to escape the clutches of the excise men.

There are also stories that associate the village with the outlaw Robin Hood. One legend recounts how Robin Hood came to “The Bay” to escape the clutches of the authorities. He disguised himself as a fisherman to avoid arrest, fell in love with a local girl and lived in the village for a number of years. Although unlikely to be true, it is a romantic story that accounts for the name of the village.
