John’s christening is in the Windlesham parish records in 1797. John son of Edward HAMMOND and Jane DALE January 4th 1797. Edward married Jane DALE on the first of October 1789, and they had nine children before Jane died in 1805. Edward remarried in 1818 to Mary RESTALL. There are many surviving records that mention Edward HAMMOND. Edward, in his capacity of parish clerk witnessed many of the marriages in Windlesham. His name is on the 1813 Enclosure map, His main lands seem to be Twelve acres at Snows Paddock Windlesham as it is now called. There are Tax records, many property records and of course his will (ref. DW/PA/1839/11) which mentions all his living children, and his deceased daughters’ children and his wife. One of the most interesting documents I found (SRO 361/15/38) was when there was a dispute as to were the boundary was between the parishes of Winkfield & Windlesham (Surrey and Berkshire), Edward HAMMOND parish clerk gave evidence that he had cut and carried away turf’s off the disputed land for 20 years and therefore claming it was part of Windlesham. Edward is described as a Yeoman, Nurseryman or Parish Clerk.

Edward’s christening was in Windlesham on the 24th February 1765. His father was James HAMMOND and mother was Sarah WILLIAMS. I looked in the IGI for details of there marriage. It stated that I would find it in Windleshams parish records which I knew was incorrect. Consulting the West Surrey Family History Marriage index it stated that it took place in the adjacent parish of Yatley in 1764, a common mistake for the IGI, I am told. They had two other children Betty and Ann. James is in the Universal British directory vol. 2 1791 at Bagshot. Sarah died first and was buried in Windlesham in 1790. James was buried in Windlesham in 1802. James will ( ref. DW/PA/5/1803/10 ) mentions many pieces of land and his two surviving children Edward and Betty. James is described as being a Farmer, Yeoman or the Parish Clerk.

In 1737 James was baptised in the parish of Windlesham his father also being a James HAMMOND. James HAMMOND the elder married Anne CHUTER in 1736 at Windlesham. They had four more children Ann, John, Elizabeth and Mary. James the elder is decribed as a yeoman. Anne died before James and was buried in Windlesham in 1769. James the elder’s will is two pages and mentions son James, daughters Elizabeth ELLIS and Ann MEARS and grandchildren Sarah, James and John MEARS. James HAMMOND the elder died and was buried in Windlesham on the 27th May1772.

I could find no details of James HAMMOND the elder’s baptism, it should have been about 1700. The records between 1697-1717 in the parish records for Windlesham are poor and there maybe pages missing. However a John HAMMOND died in 1731, perhaps he was James father, and I could find his will.

The HAMMOND MIDDLE SCHOOL, HAMMOND CLOSE and HAMMOND POND at LIGHTWATER in the parish of WINDLESHAM. In 1987 I wrote to a school in the parish of Windlesham, which is called The HAMMOND MIDDLE SCHOOL. They wrote back with the news that the school was only 8 years old and it was named after a Reverend Henry HAMMOND as are HAMMOND CLOSE and HAMMOND POND. The Reverend Henry HAMMOND was educated at Oxford recieving a BA in 1786. He lived and owned land in the area. I had seen him on the 1813 Enclosure map for Windlesham. They also informed me that a Mrs Katharine GRONEN from the USA had also written to them a few weeks earlier asking the same question. The school exchanged our names.
