Inside St Johns Church Windlesham.
There is a monument, inside the church, to George CHEWTER (Chuter) Gent. 1688-1754. On George’s monument he leaves a benevolence of £5 a year to be given four times a year to the poor of the Parish of Windlesham.
George worked at Gobions near Hatfield co. Herts as a gardener in 1730 (PRO Kew E214/1277). Gobions was a ancient private estate and contained fine gardens, waterworks and a collection of curiosities. Gobions is now in the ownership of a local charity, the Gobions Woodland Trust, and open to the public at all times at no charge.
Another document deposited at the PRO Kew E214/1285 16 May 1754. Deals with the probate of his will, disposing of his property in the parishes of Windlesham and Woking. The administration of his will was granted to a Margaret Christmas, a spinster and his servant
George was a godparent and also possibly grand uncle to my ancestor James HAMMOND the younger (1737-1802). Also George was most likely a older brother to the Thomas CHUTER mention below. Unfortunately George describes his relatives in his will just as kinsmen.

South Farm and Harrishaws.
Three daughters of Thomas and Elizabeth CHUTER (CHEWTER) married three sons of John and Jane HAMMOND. Mary to John (who moved to Horsell) in February 1732. Ann to James ( my ancestors) in November 1736 and Elizabeth to Henry (Buried in Windlesham Churchyard and ancestors to Katharine) in December 1736. A fourth sister Sarah married William ELLIS in 1737. Sarah’s descendants inherited Harrishaws.

I believe the HAMMONDS and CHUTERS lived next door to each other. The CHUTERS at Harrishaws ( CHUTERS corner is marked close to Harrishaws on the 1813 Inclosure map) and the HAMMONDS at South Farm. South Farm, although rebuilt, still has the tile H-H 1736 over the front door. The land was under HAMMOND control since 1660 and was sold to Fromow & Waterer in the 1900’s
As for Harrishaws it had a William CHOTTER living at it in 1536, and he may well be one of the oldest known ancestors of mine living in Windlesham.
