Guide to London Gatwick (LGW)
Gatwick has a good viewing area provided on the south terminal. This contains a cafe and shop as well as a few other attractions. There is a charge of about £1.50 to get on top of "Sky view". From the area reasonable views can be seen. Most of the south terminal is visible and with a small pair of binoculars registrations can be obtained from the single runway quite easily. The north terminal though is much more distant and one side cannot be seen at all. Photography of certain aircraft is very difficult from here. Only aircraft using stands close to the area on the south terminal can be photographed.
The car Parks at the south terminals are good positions for landing shots, although the authorities would rather you go to the terrace (and pay the £1.50 or so to get on there). Car Park one is best (first as you enter short stay car park). From the top floor aircraft arriving on 26L can be photographed easily. Only a small lens for bigger aircraft is required.
Aircraft using stands close to the viewing are can be photographed well.
The car parking charges at Gatwick are, as follows:
£1.40 - up to 30 minutes
£2.40 - up to 1 hour
£3.60 - up to 2 hours
£4.70 - up to 3 hours
£5.70 - up to 4 hours
£10.00 - up to 12 hours
A number of operators use Gatwick and the airport handles the majority of the areas charter movements due to Heathrow being totally schedule. A full list of timetables for Gatwick and the rest of the UK can be obtained at any good aviation store. "Airport Timetables UK" is priced at £14.95 and is published every season. The same publishers also produce a list of timetables for just Heathrow and Gatwick
