A

Aedeagus a moth's penis.

Androconial Scales - Specialised scales on the wings of some males which diffuse sents secreted by associated glands.

Chorion - the outer membrane of the ova.

Costa - The leading edge of the wing.

Ditrysia - a major division of the order Lepidoptera, contains about 95% of all lepidoptera. In Britain the Ditrysia contains the following subfamilies of moths Tineoidea, Yponomeutoidea, Gelechoidea, Cossoidea, Tortricoidea, Sesioidea, Zygaenoidea, Scheckensteinioidea, Epermenioidea, Alucitoidea, Pylaoidea, Pterophoroidea, Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Bombycoidea, Noctuoidea and of butterflies Paplilonoidea, Hesperioidea.

Ditrysian - the genitalia arrangement of females of ditrysia. In ditrystian geinitalia separate openings serve for copulation and oviposition.

Dorsum - The trailing edge of the wing.

Ecdysis - a moult of the larval stage.

Endoparasite - An endophageous parasite.

Endophagy - (of parasites) feeding inside the body

Endopterygote - an insect which undergoes a complete metamorphosis

Ectoparasite - An ectophageous parasite.

Endophagy - (of parasites) feeding outside of the body

Fibula - another name for the Jungum.

Scape - a part of the antennae of a moth. The long part.

Frenulum - A means of coupling the fore and hind wings in most lepidoptera.

Haemolympha - insect 'blood'.

Haustellum - the proboscis through which liquids can be drawn.

Hyperparasitism - A situation where two parasites share the same host but one of the parasites develops on the other.

Instar - The period between each ecdysis.

Jungum - A means of coupling the fore and hind wings in Zeugloptera, Dacnonypha and Hepialidae.

Macrotricia - broad, flattened scales on the wings.

Meconium - waste matter accumulated during the pupal stage.

Mesothorax - the middle part of the thorax.

Metathorax - the hindmost part of the thorax connecing to the abdomen.

Micropyle - A pore in the ovum of through which spermatozoa can enter.

Monophagy - (of parasites) confinement to a single host species.

Monotrystian - the genitalia arrangement of females of Zeugloptera, Dacnonypha and Monotrysia. In monotrystian geinitalia one opening serves for copulation and oviposition.

Multiparasitism - parasitization of a host by two or more parasite species.

Patagia - the dorsal plates on the prothorax

Pecten - pl Pectens or Pectines any comblike part or organ.

Pectinate - like a comb.

Pedicle - a part of the antennae of a moth.

Poikilothermic - cold-blooded.

Polyphagy - the ability to eat a variety of unrelated things.

Polypodus - Having lots of legs. i.e. caterpillars have a number of pesudolegs in addition to their 'real' legs.

Prothorax - the part of the thorax nearest the head.

Signum - pl Signa part of the female genital organs

Superparasitism - the situation in which more eggs are laid on or in a host be a parasite species than the host can support.

Tarsus - pl Tarsi the end of the legs (i.e. away from the body) typically five segmented.

Tegula - pl Tegulae a feature on the mesothorax above the base of the forewings.

Tegumen - part of the male genitalia.

Ternum - The outer edge of the wing.
