Here is a photo we found showing George Gall (then Commodore) presenting a goblet to Willie Farquharson when he was made Honorary Commodore. As you may know Willie was around in the very early days when the club was started up in 1958. The club was built on ground owned by him and subsequently passed to the club on his death. He also built the clubhouse and the slip. Willie helped the club in many ways after he stopped sailing and the club remembers him in our series event 'The Farquharson Trophy'. If you any information about club history please let me know so that it can be added here.
The following details are taken from the minute book and abridged by me.(DJL) If any mistakes are spotted or if you want more details while I have the minute book please let me know. At present I am simply extracting what I consider to be interesting information. Later on I plan to make it into more of a narrative style with contributions from some of the club members.
1958
'In the early summer of 1958 a small group of local sailing enthusiasts met to discuss the possibility of a sailing club being formed in Newburgh.' The following office bearers were chosen to get things moving.
Commodore: Wm D Farquharson / Vice-commodore: Hugh Thomson / Rear-commodore: James Davidson / Boat Officer: Ronald Wotherspoon / Secretary&Treasurer: David Tullis(left to go Univ.) later replaced by Jean Lauder by election.(Oct 17th meeting)
A Regatta was organised for 11/12 October 1958 with Perth SC and the Army Association Club invited. 5 boats sailed on the Saturday(stormy), 13 on Sunday. It was regarded as a success.
An open meeting was called on 17th Oct 1958 in the Canteen ,Cornhill Place
where all interested were invited to attend.
Office bearers confirmed and Jean Lauder elected.
First Subscriptions :Members 30 shillings / Family Ticket £ 2:2s (2 guineas or 42/-)/ Juniors (15-18) 15/-
Not having any premises the canteen (of the linoleum factory -Watson & Co's ) in Cornhill Street was frequently used for meetings. That first winter negotiations got underway to put a slip east of Camerons Pier . At this point it should be made clear that Willie Farquharson ran a joinery and undertaking business (Farquharson & McNaughton's workshop, East Shore) and he also built boats. His premises were south of the current dinghy park where there are now houses. His land included all the land now under the guardianship of the club.
In early 1959 WF confirmed a slipway would be built at East Shore below his yard and a working party was arranged to clear the beach. NSC became members of the RYA and a constitution was drawn up. (March 59 minutes).
The Constitution The current version is a simpler document but essentially things have not changed much. In fact in some respects we have come full circle. Our most recent change included a phrase that subs should be paid by 1st April. This was in fact in the original document except it was the1st March and all membership rights were removed if not paid by 31st March. Unfortunately the minute book from 1983 onwards was stolen from the Hon. secretaries car so the amendements to the original constitution have no records. At some point there must have been considerable simplification.
In those early days no fixture list existed as the aim was to get as much sailing as possible. Instruction meetings to learn boat terms were held in WF's workshop as were some committee meetings..
Opening sailing on 6th June with 4 boats. On 14th June Perth and Army Association clubs raced from Perth to Newburgh and altogether 20 boats had a sail around Newburgh while water was available. Newburgh was thanked for its hospitality where WF's premises were used. / £42/12/8 in club funds / rent for use of slipway to be £1 per annum to WF / WF also granted the club the use of a hut and the ground at the bottom of his yard for stowing boats meantime. / road blocks to be removed (presumably wartime tank barriers)/ committee to be office bearers plus 4 members / R Wotherspoon to enter Royal Tay week in Enterprise 'Mistral'./ Wed nights to be club nights either sailing or work parties. / WF offered club a National 12 dinghy (Blue Trout) for £80 with £10 due now and the rest in stages./ 2 lifejackets purchased / boat hire 2/6 per hour - helms to give up boat to others waiting on the slip.

associated clubs like Condor, Loch Earn etc.
At this time it seems there was a good social relationship between clubs
and people regularly visited other clubs. Club points racing was often cancelled
to go somewhere else.
It was decided that the AGM be held in March. It seems that invitations were send to other clubs in writing and written replies from clubs who plan to come to open events were expected. Winter talks on new racing rules were planned and a motorboat section recommended.

its growth culminating now in a splendid Clubhouse. I have shared the good
comradeship of other Clubs at Regattas and the bonhomie of our Club. I wish

this ends the entries from the first minute book
the next book was filled up by Andrew Morrison who was the secretary up until 199? . Later it was stolen from the car of the then current secretary. After this no minute book has been kept . As far as I know there is no continuous record of the minutes but I shall ask the secretary when I can get to speak to him next. So I need information from club members about any major events which took place between 1983 and the present. I need info. about what happened and when. First is a list of dates and then comes a list of things I know happened but not when.
