The Postgraduate Diploma in
Dramatherapy is a professional training for those who
wish to become dramatherapists as well as those who
wish to integrate dramatherapy into their present way
of working. It is validated by the University of
Leeds and recognised by the British
Association for Dramatherapists as a professional qualification for
full membership of the Association.

The Sesame Institute provides training in the use of

Validation of training courses
Approval to run training course is given
by the Executive Committee of the British Association for Dramatherapists on the recommendation of the Training sub-committee.
Only those courses which have Association approval can lead to
full membership of the British Association for dramatherapists.
Components
of training courses
In identifying basic components of all
seven courses in Dramatherapy, there is a large degree of
compatibility, though each course provides some elements which
are accepted as over and above a basic content. This results in
each course having a unique identity
The basic components common to all
courses are:
- experience and competence in a
broad range of drama and theatre skills, approaches and
techniques including performance work
- understanding and awareness of
relevant psychological, psychotherapeutic and
anthropological principles and practices.
- participation in an ongoing,
experiential Dramatherapy training group
- knowledge of related therapies such
as art, music, dance/movement and play
- supervised Dramatherapy practice
- continuous assessment and written
work
- personal development/therapy
Supervision
and ongoing development
As from 1992 all newly qualifying
Dramatherapists are required by the Association to participate in
regular supervision in order to be eligible for Full Membership,
and supervision throughout one's working life has been adopted as
a formal recommendation.
In addition to the above-named British
establishments, a range of other individuals and organisations
offer short courses, workshops and summer schools which provide
opportunity for Dramatherapists to further develop specific
skills and pursue personal development. Information regarding
such events regularly published in the Association's Newsletter
and can also be obtained by contacting the recognised training
courses.
Europe
DthTraining
in Greece
Dramatherapy and Playtherapy Modular Course Structure
The Cousre concerns students in Greece (Athens and
Thessaloniki) and Cyprus. The Course consists of four-year
part time training with approximately 1000 hours of
contact time in Seminars and Tutorial Groups, directed
study, practical experience and personal therapy.

Finland
Dramatherapy training
The Faculty of Education is situated in Vaasa. It was
founded in 1974 and it is responsible for the training of
all Swedish-speaking teachers in Finland. The faculty is
the oldest part of the Ostrobothnian Unit of Åbo Akademi
University in Vaasa. The Vaasa Teacher Training School (primary,
secondary and upper secondary levels) is closely linked
to the Faculty of Education. The education of
kindergarten teachers takes place in the town of
Jakobstad (Pietarsaari) in Finnish.

US and Canada
Drama therapy combines the aims and techniques of
drama/theatre with those of psychotherapy to treat
individuals in crisis and help those with special needs
to expand their quality of life. New York University was
the first in the country to develop an academic program
leading to a Master of Arts degree in drama therapy. The
program attracts theatre professionals and educators,
therapists, and those working in the fields of medicine,
nursing, and special education. Students come from
diverse cultural and academic backgrounds to study and
apprentice with the leading professionals in the creative
arts therapies. Classes are small and instruction
individualized. The drama therapy program has been
approved by the National Association for Drama Therapy.
