"We regret to announce the death of Mr James Shirres of Shirres, Webster & McKenzie, Wholesale Warehouseman of Market Street, Aberdeen at his residence. He never occupied any public position except by a connection with the city parochial board. He was a well known citizen, much esteemed for his excellent qualities. On Sunday week he had attended the Free West Church of which he was an elder and caught a chill that day, later dying of inflammation. He took over the family business from brother William in 1862 in company with Webster & McKenzie." - Obituary notice in local paper.

Granted at Aberdeen to Jane Spencer or Shirres his widow, William Shirres 32, Bon Accord Terrace, Aberdeen and David Logan Shirres, Tullos House, Nigg near Aberdeen, his brothers, James MacKenzie, Warehouseman Aberdeen and John Muill Advocate there. Executors nominated in will or deed dated 20.3.1883 and recorded in court books of commissariat of Aberdeen 5.6.1884.

"The firm by name SHIRRES, WEBSTER & MACKENZIE and to make such arrangements and settlements relating to by share and interest in said business as they may think proper and advisable and may allow the said share and interest to remain in the hands of my surviving partner for such period or periods as they may think proper or conducive to the interest of my estate and in addition to the powers & ?? conferred on gratuities Trustees by Act of Parliament or enjoyed by them at common law my trustees shall have power to sell all or any part of my said estate either by public oup(?) or private bargain with or without advertisement as they might think proper and I hereby expressly authorise and empower my trustees either to continue the investments in which means and estate may be placed at my death or to realise and invest said means and estate or any part thereof upon such security real or personal as they may consider or be advised to be sufficient and satisfactory releasing hereby and discharging them from all responsibility incurred or to be incurred through the same not being in strict accordance with the investments authorised by law for trust funds."
