In early 1950s visited Europe on a trip arranged by Aunt Christian Selina, including a visit to Covent Garden

In 1959 his wife, who was not happy as a farmer's wife in New Zealand, persuaded him to move to Melbourne so that she could be near her family. John had understood that her parents could ensure he had a farm so that he could continue farming. However this was not the case. On his move to Australia John became an Auditor for a furniture company and was made redundant in 1989.

He divorced his wife in 1972.
