Summary
When he loses his son and his wife
in childbirth James is totally bereft. An introduction to a hermit
gradually changes his life irrevocably. Although the Hermit turns out to
be a Roman Catholic, James finds he can completely identify with his
profound spirituality, precisely because it is so scriptural and drawn
from the same Christian Masters who had originally inspired him.
This
book comprises in one volume The Hermit, The Prophet and The
Mystic, last published in separate volumes by Hodder and
Stoughton in England and by Alba House in America. All the
reviews of these books therefore can be read as endorsements of Wisdom
from the Western Isles too. However David has spent over a year
rewriting the earlier works to make them far more ecumenical and
simplifying them to make them more readable for a lay readership as they
have been fused into one book. All obscure passages have been eliminated
and more material has been added making the book into what he sees as
his life’s work. Indeed the work has taken the author forty years of
personal lived experience of the spiritual life and almost as many years
rewriting and honing it contents.
Interest in prayer and the spiritual has risen to new heights in
recent years however many odd and exocentric misinterpretations of the
authentic Christian tradition have mislead all too many serious
searchers into spiritual cul-de-sacs. This book has been written as an
engaging page-turner to present the true tradition to a modern
readership and to lure those who have been misled back to ancient
spiritual traditions that have successfully nourished the faith of
Christians from the beginning.
