ELF was established in 1992 by a broad group of environmentalists, lawyers and scientists. It secured charitable status in 1995. It is based on a national network of expert environmental solicitors, barristers, consultants and academics, all committed to the Foundation’s purpose and aims and may provide free initial advice and assistance and then, if required, further support on either a free, at cost or reduced-fee rate. Since its formation, ELF has been contacted by many thousands of people experiencing a wide variety of concerns relating to their environment. It has referred over 1,300 cases to practitioner members on behalf of local communities faced with environmental problems that might not otherwise have been argued adequately or even voiced at all.

The Foundation relies on an impressive group of individuals and organisations including the Trustees, Project Team, Advisory Council, the many funding partners and all its members and friends, who together support and inform the various projects operated by the Foundation.
