ELF launches environmental/legal surgeries

As part of its London Environment Outreach Project, ELF is launching a series of Environmental/Legal Surgeries in London designed for individuals and community groups who are interested in protecting their surrounding environment or who want to know how the law can work for them.

To mark the launch, ELF held a special evening exhibition this week at Islington Central Library, opened by Maria Adebowale, Director of the Environmental Law Foundation and Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth. This was an informal gathering and an opportunity for those attending to meet ELF's staff and volunteers and to find out more about the projects undertaken by ELF and the surgeries.

For further information on the Environmental/Legal Surgeries, please see our Events section or contact our ELF Outreach Caseworker for the London area on 020 7404 1136.

ELF teams up with LSE and Liberty

In April 2000, ELF hosted a one-day conference on Noise pollution entitled Confronting Noise in association with LSE Environmental Initiatives Network (LSEEIN). The conference reviewed both the effects of noise pollution and possible solutions by which to tackle it.

In March 2000 ELF held a one-day seminar in association with Liberty on the new Human Rights Act. The event attracted leading human rights lawyers and widened the debate over environmental rights.

Justice Award Recognises ELF's work

ELF's Director, Maria Adebowale accepting the awardThe Environmental Law Foundation was named last year as the organisation that had done the most to widen access to justice, in the The Times/Justice Law Awards. The awards, in their second year, are given on the strength of nominations from collegues and clients and this year were presented at a reception by Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer at No 11 Downing Street. The award reflects ELF's "impressive contribution to environmental justice fo the underdog by its persistence, diligence and professional commitment". Recognising the work of ELF, Daniel Brennan QC, Chariman of the Bar Council, said, "Many of the individuals and groups the foundation has worked with are disadvantaged economically and socially, from rural and urban areas. They have few sources of information. They cannot afford expensive specialist help".
