Advice and Referral Service

ELF's staff

What kind of problems does ELF cover?

Environmental law covers the rules, regulations and procedures that are used to protect the environment around us. There may be a way, using the law, to resolve a situation or reverse a decision that has the potential to harm our health or environment. Through ELF's advice and referral service, members of the public are given support and guidance, and can receive a free initial consultation with a local solicitor or technical expert to investigate how the law may be used to resolve a problem.

The environment is the world around us and whether we live in a city, a town or a village, we are all entitled to standards of clean air and water, to be consulted on local decisions and to be untroubled by commercial activity. Most environmental problems come under the broad categories of pollution, development and health. In some cases people are taking positive action such as conservation and education projects or promoting sustainable development.

ELF deals with matters which threaten the environment at both a local and global level. It is however, unable to advise and refer matters that are essentially neighbour or housing disputes. If you are in any doubt, please contact the ELF office. If we are unable to refer your case to one of our members we will always try to send you on to a more appropriate organisation.

How much does it cost?

Through our referral service an individual or community group will receive a free initial consultation with an ELF member. This will be an opportunity to look at what the problem is, what the possible solutions could be, and what action can now be taken. Members agree to do any further work at reduced fees, legal aid rates, or, in some cases, for free. Clients should agree this with members at the free initial consultation.

What to do now?

If you think you have an environmental problem then contact the Environmental Law Foundation for free advice and assistance. Our office cannot answer specific legal or technical questions but we can advise you on your next step and, where appropriate, refer you to one of our expert members.
