Although he doesn't like us to say it, BOAFS wouldn't exist if it weren't for Peter Wise: it was he who called the open meeting in the Priory Barn in early 1989 to discover if anybody was interested in a film society in the town. The first committee meeting (to choose the films) took place a little while later in the back room of The Bunch of Grapes. |

I remember that I became involved purely by chance. Chris had volunteered to become Treasurer at the Priory Barn meeting; by the time the first committee meeting rolled around we had our good friend Bruce staying with us – so Bruce and I went to the Grapes for a beer while Chris did the meeting thang. There in the back room were Peter Wise, Sophie Carrdus, Peter Roberts, Thalia Race, Neil MacDougall and Jill Pegden. As Bruce and I settled ourselves at a careful distance, someone (it may have been Peter W) said to me, "Do you know anything about films?" "Umm, a bit," I said. "Well have a look at this catalogue, then!" Poor Bruce. Abandoned with his beer, he kept saying, "Well, I think you should show The Rebel," and we've been ignoring him for 15 years! |
