| Now where were we ? Oh yes you wanted to see Sue , I am sorry but nobody has seen Sue yet , as you remember she was a little mouse playing hide and seek and it was nightime and dark so she couldn't be seen . Perhaps we shall manage to catch her later . Nanny looked in her papers and we have found two pictures to show you . Ask Mummy to show them to you . One shows the Minster and where we think Sue is and the other a secret picture of one of Sue's friends , so we expect Sue will look like that . |
| What was Sue doing when we left her , Do you remember ? She was asleep in a big dark room up many stairs and up a furry rope with lots of big bells , That is how she spent the rest of the night , a very sleepy and tired little mouse. Do you remember what she had to do in the day time ? . . . . She MUST be down in the church hidden and quiet for the day time but the room was dark and she was tired and stayed asleep . |
| The sun rose and shone in through the coloured windows . . . The Dean [ a very important man ] came and unlocked the Minster and the man who rang the bells also came in , They got ready for the first Service . When they were ready the bellringer went up the bell tower , into the room with the furry ropes and he took hold of the strongest rope . . . He pulled . . .once , twice , threetimes he pulled and then the great big bell RANG |
| Up in the room above , the bell made an enormous noise , and the sleeping Sue Jumped high in the air more frightened than she had ever been . She ran round and round , faster each time the bell rang .Oh it did hurt her ears it was so loud . How could she get away ! She couldn't go back down the rope because the man was pulling it and it and the wheels and the bell were swinging away much too fast for Sue . On about her fourth run round , very fast by now , she slipped and banged into a door . It opened and Sue shot through as fast as she could . |
| Outside the bell room it was still very noisy but much better . Sue saw stairs going down and started to run down them. Bong went the bell. Sue ran . Bong went the Bell again and Sue ran faster and faster down the stairs . Soon she was running down the stairs a bit too fast She slipped , missed one step altogether and bounced on the next one . . .Bong went the bell . . Bounce went Sue . . Bong went the bell . .Bounce . Bong . Bounce , Bong , Bounce down the stairs she went . |
| It had been a hard climb up but it seemed an even longer Bong -Bounce all the way down to the little door at the bottom . Luckily that was now open and Sue shot out into the Minster . Ouch ! . . . she felt herself all over , her tail was a little bent but that would get better and her bouncing bit was rather sore but she wouldn't tell that to anyone !
Sue was glad that was all over . She could still hear the bell but now it sounded soft and kind and really quite friendly but where was she ? In the middle of the Minster with the sun shining brightly through the lovely windows . Sue had never seen the Minster like this , it was big , so big and so interesting so she wandered around looking at all the lovely things . She was so excited by all the things she could see that she forgot what mice were supposed to do during the day time , you remember they were supposed to hide and keep very quiet , She walked up and down the aisles all out in the open , noticing everything except that the bell was now ringing faster and faster . Sue didn't know but that meant the people were coming to the minster for the morning service . The North Door opened and in came lots of people , lots and lots of them , of all kinds . |
| Sue remembered - she should not be there - she should be hidden - she must not be seen ! Again she ran round and round , in and out of the chairs now , trying to hide . In between the peoples feet , what a lot of feet they had , hoping nobody would see her . The people sat down and it went quiet Sue stopped running and started to think . what to do ? where to hide ? |
| The lady she was standing by put her handbag on the floor . Sue looked at it . It was dark brown , made of soft leather and rather nice but to Sue it was somewhere to hide . Quietly and carefully she crept inside . It was dark and soft inside and when she stood on her hind legs she could just see out . She decided to stay there and to wait and see what happened with all these people . Perhaps she could get away later and hide as she should , , , perhaps she shouldn't have started all these adventures . . . . Perhaps . . perhaps . . perhaps . . perhaps . . |
