A Brief History
The manufacture of Gilbern Cars stretches from the Late 50's to the early 70's. There were later attempts to revive the marque but these also foundered.
Giles Smith and Bernard Friese (hence the name Gilbern) set about producing an attractive GT sport saloon and based upon MGB and other parts around produced the first GT model. Many of the original cars were "Kit" cars although the work required to complete many was minimal. The GT was replaced by the Genie this time powered by a Ford V6 engine. The Genie was a success and the company grew and went through several changes of ownership as new capital was required.
In 1969 the Mark I Invader was produced and is successive years the Mark II & Mark III Invaders followed at about the same rate as new owners. The Mark II invader was also produced in an estate form. A mid engined model was also planned but luck, and new owners, ran out leaving a total production of cars around the thousand mark.
The Gilbern Owners Club, which was founded in 1979, strives to keep the marque alive and promote the virtues of the only car designed and built in Wales. The club flourishes today being a focal point for owners and a vital link in providing spares and technical support.
I count my self lucky to be both an owner and club member (even if a very new one!)
