KANCHANABURI

(West of Bangkok)

Near the Burmese border, 2 hours drive to the west of Bangkok, is Thailand's third largest province. Rugged natural beauty in a landscape characterised by river valleys, waterfalls and jungle clad mountains; its inhabitants are largely engaged in agriculture. Major attractions, are inextricably connected with World War II; the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, assembled by allied prisoners of war under Japanese supervision as part of the 'Death Railway' which was later bombed and rebuilt after the war. The was museums and war cemetery contain memorabilia and the remains of those who perished during the railway's construction.
