Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, is a modern cosmopolitan city known as the garden city due to its wide tree-lines streets bisecting a blend of gleaming high rise hotels and offices and grand old colonial architecture. Harare has plenty to offer whether your interests lie in history, nature, wildlife or sport with numerous golf courses within a 20 mile radius of the city centre, many of championship standard.
HWANGE NATIONAL PARK Hwange National Park is the largest of Zimbabwe's game parks, measuring some 14,000 square kilometres. Being the product of Zimbabwe's exemplary commitment to conservation with over 100 species of animal and 400 species of birds, it is one of the few remaining elephant sanctuaries in Africa where hers of up to 100 elephants can still be seen (known as the 'Presidential Elephants'). There is a wide choice of privately owned safari lodges and luxury tented camps, all of which operate game drives and guided walks into the national park and in their own private concessions. Late afternoon, evening and early morning are the best times for game viewing and night drives offer opportunities for rare sightings of certain nocturnal creatures only seen at night. ![]() |
Just an hour's flight from Harare lie the mighty Victoria Falls, one of the spectacular wonders of the world.
Here, the Zambezi river, one mile wide, thunders into a chasm 300 feet deep. A billowing spray spirals high above the Falls creating an exotic rain forest in the midst of the surrounding savannah. LAKE KARIBA Kariba originates from the shona word Kariwa, meaning a little strap. In 1958 a dam wall was constructed across a narrow gorge in the Zambezi valley. As the Zambezi river flooded the valley it created an inland sea some 290 kms ![]() in length and 42kms across, at its widest point. The lake is studded with islands and surrounded by mountains and an abundance of wildlife, including elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, crocodile and prolific birdlife. As well as giving the country hydro electricity, the lake and the surrounding Matusadona National Park, provides a playground for fishing, yachting, cruising, bird watching & game viewing. The summit of the hill above Kariba town, known as 'the Heights', offers a spectacular panorama |
of the lake, the dam wall, the marina and the
downstream gorge. Visitors may wish to visit the Church of Saint Barbara,
built in honour of those who lost their lives constructing the dam.
EASTERN
In sharp contrast to the Zambezi valley, the mountain range along Zimbabwe's
eastern border is cooler and greener, rising to a height of nearly 8000
ft above sea level. The idyllic area, which is similar to the highlands
of Scotland, including the areas of Nyanga, the Vumba and Chimanimani,
is well known for its pine forests, tea estates, aloe gardens, clear streams
and waterfalls. the area attracts walkers,
fishermen and golfers in particular. Leopard Rock Country Club, situated in the Vumba mountains, is arguably one of the best courses in southern Africa. ![]() |
