BOREHAM WOOD (1) 2 Lawford (2) 43, 48 (Pen)
UXBRIDGE (1) 3 Clark 4, Tunnell 57, Gill 74
Uxbridge supporters who missed this game must surely have had to check the score twice on Teletext as the Reds secured only their second ever victory at Meadow Park, and only their second away league victory of the season. Boreham Wood currently lying second in the table never really got into their stride, and Uxbridge took the lead as early as the 4th minute. An astute pass from Steve Walters gave Lee Tunnell some space on the right hand side of the penalty area and his low cross, was drilled into the corner of the net by Dean Clark from twelve yards. This lead should have been doubled ten minutes later when Lee Tunnell was clean through, but he dragged his shot wide of Noel Imber's far post. Darryl Pelton who was making his return to the Uxbridge goal was only forced into serious action in the 20th minute when Paul Kelly fired in a low shot, which was comfortably dealt with. As the half wore on Uxbridge still continued to create chances, Stuart Bamford headed just over from a corner and Mark Gill caught a half volley well which fizzed past the upright. However John Lawford was proving to be a thorn in the Reds defence and wasted a good chance in the 34th minute when he shot straight at Pelton when he was well placed. He atoned for this miss ten minutes later though, when a long ball found him with just Pelton to beat and he slotted his shot underneath the onrushing Darryl Pelton.
The scene seemed to be set for 'The Wood' to go on and win the game in the second half, and just three minutes in they did indeed get a second. Darryl Pelton came out to meet Tony Samuels and appeared to collide with both attacker and the backtracking Stuart Bamford. The referee saw this as an infringement and Lawford duly slotted home the resultant penalty. Uxbridge though refused to let their heads drop and were level just 6 minutes later. Mark Gill had a shot deflected wide, and from the corner Lee Tunnell found himself all alone from 6 yards his turn and shot crept under Imber and into the net. The Red's now sensed that a shock could be on the cards and contained Boreham Wood to a few long range efforts whilst always looking threatening on the break. The home sides best chance came in the 60th minute when ex-Hayes favourite Junior Haynes fired wide form an acute angle with the Uxbridge defence stranded. Chances were at a premium as both defences marshalled the strikers, but Uxbridge got a stroke of luck in the 75th minute when some neat work from Gavin Bamford set-up Lee Tunnell, his shot was blocked by a number of defenders. But the ball fell kindly to the unmarked Mark Gill, his well placed shot found the corner of the net despite Noel Imber getting hands on it. This stunned Boreham Wood and they never recovered, and indeed Uxbridge could have scored a fourth in the dying moments, when Dean Clark fired in a free kick, which had to be acrobatically tipped over by Imber. This result means that Uxbridge have pulled out of the bottom six and can look towards the forthcoming games with renewed confidence.
