  • The scoreline may look a comfortable one, but Uxbridge were pushed all the way by Essex Senior League side Leyton, even managing to force the game into extra time before finally succumbing to an extraordinary late avalanche of goals. There was a sign of things to come even before kick off when the referee and his assistants were locked in the dressing rooms and as a result the game kicked off 5 mins late. When the game did get underway it was the home side who settled the quicker, with Damian Devor proving to be more than a handful for the Red's defence. Leyton had two good chances in the opening ten minutes firstly when Dave Muir caught a sweet volley from the edge of the box which was well parried by Daryl Pelton and then 3 minutes later a free kick was somehow scrambled clear at the third time of asking. Uxbridge created their best chance in the 11th minute when Gavin Bamford found some free space in the box, his low cross left Steve Walters with an open goal but his shot was just cleared off the line by a backtracking defender. Leyton should have had the lead on the half hour when Devor broke through but he lifted his shot wide of the post as Pelton came out to narrow the angle. Jamie Carter was providing the home side's defence cause for concern for the entire half, and it was no surprise that it was him who gave Uxbridge the lead just 3 minutes before the break. A high through ball caught Leyton square at the back and Carter coolly lobbed goalkeeper Steve Wallduck, to give Uxbridge a slender half time advantage. It was the Reds who started the second half strongly, creating numerous chances to double their lead. On 56 mins Mark Gill directed a header towards the bottom corner, only for Wallduck to tip the ball round the post. Jamie Carter then fired a volley millimetres wide of the far post from six yards, taking a coat of paint and most of the Uxbridge travelling support with it! And just before the hour mark Dean Clark drilled a shot wide of the other post, after some good work from Jamie Carter. However Uxbridge were made to pay for these missed chances just one minute later, when Christian Mccann got round the back of the Uxbridge defence, and his low cross was expertly put away into the far corner by Damian Devor, leaving Pelton with no chance. Uxbridge continued to create chances and Dean Clark hit the inside of the post and saw the ball roll agonisingly along the line before being cleared, and Mark Gill was providing an aerial threat but Wallduck was proving his equal saving well twice from the Uxbridge captain. The home side never really created too many chances but were still on level terms at the end of 90 minutes, and deservedly so. The first period of Extra time turned out to be one that nobody who was there will forget for a long while. Just 90 seconds in Uxbridge did get a second goal when Dean Clark headed home Jamie Carter's cross at the second attempt. A minute later Jamie Cater had his shot blocked only for the ball to fall to Mark Gill who slotted the ball home from a narrow angle. Less than a minute after that the game was effectively over when Dean Clark found acres of space on the edge of the box and curled a delightful shot past the stranded keeper to make it 3 goals in just 3 mins 45 seconds for the Reds. Things went from bad to worse for the home side, as Roy Parkyn was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 95th minute, after he took exception to Carter's 50-50 challenge on the keeper. Leyton heads then began to drop, and the Reds took full advantage. Gill looped in a header at the far post in the 99th minute and two minutes later Paul Hamer scored his first goal in his first appearance in the first team when he slid the ball past the onrushing Wallduck after a fine through ball from Dean Clark. The second half would always be an anticlimax and so it proved, with Leyton never really providing any threat. Uxbridge did add one more goal when Gavin Bamford's low cross was turned in at the far post by Hamer for his second and the Reds seventh. At the final whistle while it was Uxbridge who had made it into the quarter finals, Leyton would have felt disappointed at losing by such a margin after keeping the Reds at bay for 90 minutes. The result though proving that changing the name of the competition has not changed Uxbridge's fortunes in it.
