POTTERS BAR TOWN (0) 1 Chalkley 63
Uxbridge put their recent disappointing Ryman league form behind them to notch up another comprehensive FA Cup victory. The Reds took the lead in the fifth minute when Nicky Ryder got on the end of Chris Moore's excellent left wing cross to score from close range and though Potters Bar gave a decent account of themselves in the early stages, Uxbridge seldom looked like being the victims of a giant killing. The game itself was fairly low key for the opening half hour but Potters Bar clearly still fancied their chances, despite falling behind to that early strike. Andy Martin had a shot blocked on twenty-three minutes and then shortly afterwards a fine tackle from Kevin Cleary denied Leon Archer a half chance. As the half progressed though so the Reds became more and more dominant. Moore made a good run and hit a powerful shot at the end of it which Potters Bar goalkeeper John Leahy did well to hold and then Lee Tunnell looked to have been bundled down in the penalty area by Scott Walton but the referee waved play on. Steve Walters wasn't far off target with a twenty-yard effort on the half hour and then the Reds turned that dominance into a crucial second goal. Moore had been fouled just inside the penalty area and an indirect free kick was given. Mark Gill touched the ball to Dean Clark who hit a fierce shot through a crowd of players to the home supporters delight. Tunnell's attempted lob soon after wasn't high enough and then Leahy worked wonders to turn the same striker's shot round the post.
Three minutes into the second half Clark's pinpoint twenty-yard pass sent Moore through and he lobbed Leahy to made it three nil and the Reds were already thinking about the next round. Seven minutes later Leahy pushed Ryder's shot over the crossbar and from the resultant Clark corner Stuart Bamford headed wide. Martin was only just wide with a shot at the other end but it was still Uxbridge who controlled the game. Gill had a shot stopped on the goal line by Leahy just before the hour as the Reds pressure continued but the Spartan South Midlands side gave themselves a slight hope of salvaging something from the tie in the sixty- third minute when Matt Chalkley headed in from close range. A couple of minutes later Chalkley beat Sean Dawson to a through ball just inside the penalty area but his shot was blocked by Phil Granville. In the sixty-seventh minute Leahy pushed a Clark 20 yard volley round the post and from the corner Stuart Bamford was only inches over with a header. It wasn't long though before Uxbridge substitute Danny Jordan scored his sides fourth with a precisely placed shot from a Gill cross and the game was over. Nine minutes from time Clark sent Lee Tunnell away and he calmly slotted home number five and the score line could have been even more conclusive as in the dying minutes Clark only had Leahy to beat but shot wide, Jordan made a great turn and then saw his shot clip the left hand post and then Clark again just had Leahy to beat but the 'keeper saved with his feet. The Reds FA Cup goal tally is now an impressive eleven from two games in this season's competition. However the fact that nineteen of the twenty four goals Uxbridge have scored this season have come in three games might just have manager George Talbot introducing goal rationing at the club.
