This one originated in a secondhand camera shop in Prague and
was one of my first 'serious' stereo purchases although in my
opinion the camera is aimed at the type of person who wants a
relatively easy 3D life . It delivers on this promise provided
you are happy taking slides that are tied to the (Larger than
Realist) European format. Cost was approx £150 (GBP) which
included the Fed Stereo projector, several slides and boxes, 5
pairs of polarised glasses and a silver screen.
An excellent reproduction/translation of the Manual
for this camera is available. The camera itself can be bought
from the Widescreen
Centre in London or from Kalimex.
in Prague.
Good Points:
- No need to mess about with 'F' Stops as the Fed has an
automatic exposure option (can be overridden if required)
- Focussing is simple ("dummy" style) ,
consisting of 4 settings with icons.
- Has a single movement cock & wind (ie camera is
automatically cocked as it is wound on to the next shot)
- Has a standard flash attachment.
- Takes 'European' format allowing larger shots to be taken
from a standard 35mm film
- Is relatively cheap to buy.
- Is still available new in several flavours (Kalimex
Optics in Prague) (The Widescreen Centre in London)
Not so good Points:
- Loading film must be done carefully using plenty of
leader to ensure that film 'catches on'.
- Uses a non-standard Format (requires European format
slide mounts for best results)
- Flash doesn't always trigger (apparently this is a common
problem with this particular model)
As an addendum to this page I have recently heard that
production of the FED Stereo range may soon cease
