| It's very rare when an
author as prolific as Brian has his entire oeuvre in
print at once. Only writers such as Terry Pratchett and
Stephen King can manage such a feat. However, Brian's
work is still available if you know where to look and his
current books are among the best he has ever written, so
the picture is far from hopeless. Below are a few sources. I'm being paid by none of them; in fact I don't even receive publicity material so I'm completely impartial, except for my first source: Brian Stableford: Hardbacks @ £10.00, $20 (US surface) or $25 (US airmail) each: |
||
| The Empire of Fear: "Stableford's strength is that beneath the diverting surface, he makes cogent points about the disease of power and the power of disease, as well as demanding more from the vampire than its usual stereotype." - Time Out magazine. "There is much original and intricate speculation here... a compelling read." - The Listener. |

Sexual Chemistry: "The real strength of the book lies in the wisdom of its portraits of human lives through time. Under the cold wit, and the cruel jokes, and the conte cruel ironies, there beats a heart of gold: so that the final effect of Sexual Chemistry is alchemical. It changes the mind." - John Clute in Interzone 50, August 1991. |

| Young Blood: I couldn't find any reviews to quote for this one, but I can say that it is one of very few books that has actually shocked me despite seeing what was coming. Although the cover is easily the most distasteful of any of Brian's books (It is known that Brian wasn't consulted and does not approve.), this is a deep and sophisticated story, as much philosophy fiction as science fiction. Simply put: in the late eighties and early nineties Brian weaved a thread of purest gold. |

Inherit the Earth: "This is science fiction as it should be. A gripping plot and what feels like a plausible view of what the future may bring... A suspenseful tale of ratcheting tension and unprecedented curves. This is as taut a thriller as they come, with enough surprises to stock an entire Hollywood season. Stableford is even kind enough to let us deduce the modus operandi used to achieve the story's most striking instance of future - tech subterfuge. Shouldn't we love an author who doesn't insult our intelligence? Does it get any better than this? Why not hope that Stableford is just hitting hs stride..." - SF Site "This may be one of Stableford's best - a pleasure to read, well worth its price and surely an award candidate." - Analog |
||
| Architects of Emortality: "Stableford's skill at creating technologically overwhelmed future worlds is evident here. His narrative teems with vivid, believable descriptions of man-eating flowers, hundred-year-old artists and rampant genetic engineering. The scale and audacity of Stableford's vision is a wonder" - Publishers Weekly "Architects of Emortality is a science fiction/murder mystery as strange as most fantasies... This is an intriguing and successful hybid." - The Orlando Sentinel "Impressive biological speculations and an intriguing setup." - Kirkus Reviews |

The Way to
Write Science Fiction: Two chapters of this were published in Interzone 28, March/April 1989. As well as useful advice on plotting, characterisation etc, this book has a lot of information on the publishing business. Brian's career spans thirty years; what he doesn't know isn't worth knowing. |
