Imagine yourself having been on the road all day, travelling up from London by stagecoach, a journey of four days in all.
Tired, hungry, no doubt thirsty too, you arrive at Ye Olde Dolphin Inn where you expect to transfer to a local coach for the last leg of your journey home.

The London to Manchester coach, upon which you have travelled as far as Derby, clatters off into the gloom of the night, presumably in the direction of Manchester, leaving you and your fellow passengers standing in the dark inn yard.

The local coach is nowhere to be seen, and a cold wind whistles through the yard, rattling the shutters and sending a shiver down your spine. A storm is gathering and thunder rumbles in the distance. A door at the rear of the inn swings open to emit a serving wench who approaches with a lantern, she informs you that your coach has been delayed, but invites you to wait inside, where you are wined and dined, whilst a gentleman in dark attire and of sinister aspect entertains you with strange tales.

As you listen, you can't help but suspect him of having something to do with the non-arrival of your coach...
