The various specialist clinical services offered by the Department of Psychological Therapies are listed below. They all share a commitment to excellence and are part of the integrated range of services offered by the Department.

This service offers help to patients with serious psychological problems which have led to considerable disruption and distress in their lives. For some of these people, other forms of treatment or support have not been effective. The Intensive Psychological Therapies Service consists of a dedicated specialist multi-disciplinary team using predominately Cognitive Analytic Therapy techniques and other interpersonal forms of therapy. The service aims to offer patients intensive and potentially longer term psychological therapy in a number of convenient locations, including Wimborne, Christchurch, Poole and Bournemouth. It will also provide some input into CMHT’s and will have close links with other agencies and St Ann’s Hospital. For further information contact Dr. S. Clarke, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Branksome Clinic, Layton Road, Poole, Dorset. Tele:- (01202) 735300

The emphasis will be on a mix of individual and group work. It will not offer crisis intervention, although many of it’s patients will have experienced regular crises in their lives and high levels of distress.

The Trust offers a range of residential and daytime facilities for patients with the most enduring, severe and disabling illnesses. Staff from the Department of Psychological Therapies form a part of the multi-professional team and provide detailed and specialist assessment, treatment, training and consultancy. These staff are also influential in deciding the direction and philosophy of services for this group of patients. For further information contact Mr. N. Virgo, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Hahnemann House, Hahnemann Road, Bournemouth, Dorset. Tele:- (01202) 294357

Many people at some time suffer psychosexual difficulties. Mostly these are short lived and any necessary help can be offered by the GP, Primary Care Counsellor or Psychologist. Daytime and evening clinics are offered. For further information contact Ms. S. Cadbury, Clinical Psychologist, Head of Psychosexual Service, Department of Psychological Therapies, 18 Tower Road, Bournemouth, Dorset. Tele:- (01202) 304634

For many years GP’s have referred patients to Clinical Psychologists, realising they have a unique contribution to make in understanding emotional distress and enhancing patient’s self efficacy. The development of ‘in house’ services has meant that many people can now be seen quickly and conveniently in the familiar surroundings of their own GP’s surgery.

Dorset HealthCare NHS Trust felt that many individuals with personal distress did not necessarily need the range of skills offered by Clinical Psychologists, but could be effectively helped by counsellors. This led to the introduction of a pioneering scheme that has since been copied in many parts of the UK.

Nearly everyone at sometime in their lives experiences personal distress. It can be associated with a variety of circumstances, such as relationship difficulties, bereavement or unemployment. Being able to speak to a counsellor about such issues, gaining a better understanding of them and looking at the options available can be extremely beneficial. It also helps to prevent some issues developing into longer term, more ingrained problems.

Most local surgeries have a member of staff, either a psychologist or a counsellor, from Dorset HealthCare NHS Trust’s Department of Psychological Therapies offering sessions on a weekly basis. GP practices which don’t benefit from weekly sessions are able to refer patients to convenient outpatient clinics which are operated during the day and in the evening. By working closely with GP’s and other members of the Primary Health Care Team and co-ordinating knowledge of facilities available, the Department of Psychological Therapies is able to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

If it is felt that a patient has difficulties which can be helped by one of the more specialist services of the Department of Psychological Therapies, or another agency, our staff can help ensure that appropriate onward referral takes place as smoothly as possible. All staff are trained to a high standard and receive excellent on-going clinical training and support.

A small number of GP surgeries now have access to Child Clinical Psychologists who have a special knowledge of family and children’s issues. However, all our staff involve families and carers when appropriate and with the permission of patients.

It isn’t possible to list all the difficulties which can be helped by counsellors and psychologists, but the following are some of the main problems dealt with:-

Anxiety

Depression

Phobia

Relationship & Family Difficulties

Adjustment Reactions

Trauma

Bereavement

Emotional Stress

Eating Disorders

There are nine CMHT’s in the East Dorset area. All are multi-professional and provide care, support and treatment for people with enduring or more serious health problems and their carers. Clinical Psychologists from the Department of Psychological Therapies provide input to all these teams.

The type of input involved includes assistance with diagnosis, specialist treatment approaches and training or consultancy support for other staff directly involved with a patient or carer. Each Clinical Psychologist is knowledgeable about links with Primary Care and other special services. Patients and carers may be seen individually or in group situations.

The following gives an idea of the work Clinical Psychologists may carry out as part of a CMHT:

Cognitive behavioural therapy for treatment-resistant symptoms of Serious Mental Illness

Psychotherapy for trauma and severe dissociative states

Psychological treatments as an adjunct for medication in the treatment of serious depression

Diagnostic Formulation

Cognitive analytic therapy for recurrent serious self harm

Interpersonal forms of therapy

Behavioural treatment for intractable anxiety disorders

Training / supervision of psychological therapy

The Department of Psychological Therapies offers a range of services to non-NHS purchasers including Employment Assistance Packages to local organisations including clinical services to schools, universities and private health care providers.
