THE LANGUAGE OF FILM :: 4 & 5 July 2009

This lively and interactive course is ideally suited to those new to film. It explores how to tell stories on screen. We look at visual narrative, filming techniques, editing and the power of the moving image. We deconstruct the grammar of film and then show how filmmakers can apply it to their own stories.

HOW TO MAKE A FILM (foundation course) :: 25 & 25 July 2009

Everything you need to know to make a film! Using Fluid Eye Production's years of experience, we'll take you through the whole process of making a film - from script development and planning, to budgeting and scheduling, funding, casting and crewing, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. By the end of the course, students will be confident about making any film.

RESEARCH & INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES FOR DOCUMENTARY :: September 2009 tbc

Factual television and documentary depends on getting a good story as much as scripted drama does. This two day workshop will explain how to find great stories, people and facts, tell the story visually and how to shoot the best interviews. Day Two involves practical shooting and interviewing.

SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT :: (October 2009 tbc)

Getting your script right is the key to seeing your film getting made. We'll take you through the relationship between producer and writer and explore the techniques that turn a good script into a great script.

It's all very well making your masterpiece of modern cinema but what's the point if nobody ever sees it? This intensive course will guide you through finding an audience for your film; how to market it to film buyers and distributors; dealing with the Press; making the best of film festivals.

Making the leap from short films to features is more than just a matter of scale. The complexity of story, approaches to funding and distribution, and managing the production are unique in features. Through a series of lectures, case studies and guest speakers, this workshop will lead filmmakers towards a smooth and successful transition from short films to masterful cinema features.

We a have a range of practical screenwriting courses, from introduction through intermediate level to advanced techniques. We can also tailor courses to your individual needs.

re:location :: a masterclass with location manager Hugh Gourlay

A masterclass on the challenges and issues involved in filming on location. How do you find the right location or venue for your filming? What issues do you need to deal with? What legal requirements are necessary to run a smooth location shoot. We will be led by location manager Hugh Gourlay, one of the UK's top professionals whose credits include Hallam Foe, Nany McPhee & Saving Private Ryan. A unique chance to hear from a master craftsman how it should be done.
