I first thought about designing a chess set way back in 1976 when I was living and working in Germany. By early 1977 I had a number of figures in various stages of completion. At that time I was till very much a novice using Plastilin-an oil based type of plasticine to model the figures.

I really didn't have any overall concept worked out for the chess set either so that by the time I came to model the knight and tackle the intricate flutings of Maximilian armour I began to have second thoughts. My knight suddenly became a rather paunchy executioner based on some of the sketches in the 1976 edition of Wilhelm Zimmerman's Der Grosse Deutsche Bauernkrieg.

Suddenly I found myself hopelessly sidetracked on a 16 figure series called the Blutgericht (literally) "bloody court" depicting the summary beheadings of a group of peasant insurgents. I presented the series at the 1977 Deutsche Zinnfigurenbörse.

It was not until 1981 that I returned to my original project, inspired by the availability of better modelling materials and spurred on by impending fatherhood which was likely to keep me away from the modelling bench for some time.
