STORY SYNOPSIS

The Master, in the guise of Professor Thascales, has constructed at the Newton Institute in Wootton a device known as TOMTIT - Transmission Of Matter Through Interstitial Time - with which to gain control over Kronos, a creature from outside time. The creature is summoned but the effect proves uncontrollable, so the Master flees.

The Doctor shuts TOMTIT down but the Master later reactivates it, using it first to ensnare Krasis, High Priest of the lost city of Atlantis, and then to attack UNIT forces by way of a series of timeslips. The Master takes Krasis back to Atlantis in his TARDIS in the hope of stealing the sacred Crystal of Kronos, with which he aims finally to dominate the creature. The Doctor follows with Jo but is unable to prevent his enemy from seducing Queen Galleia and staging a coup. Galleia turns against the Master when she learns that he has caused the death of her husband, King Dalios.

The Master then unleashes Kronos, destroying Atlantis. The two Time Lords escape in their respective TARDISes and confront each other in the time vortex. The Doctor threatens to trigger a 'time ram' - a devastating collision - but cannot bring himself to do it.

Jo, held hostage by the Master, has no such qualms, and operates the controls herself. The two TARDISes reappear in a strange void presided over by Kronos - who now appears as a beautiful female face.

The time ram has released Kronos, who agrees to return the Doctor and Jo to Earth. The creature plans to subject the Master to eternal torment, but the Doctor pleads on his behalf and he too goes free.

 EPISODE 1

EPISODE 1 NOTES

  • The Doctor and Jo are heading for the Newton Institute. The Doctor activates a new "Super Drive" facility on Bessie which enables the car to travel at excessive speed.
  • Interestingly, the pull-lever that the Doctor uses to activate the "Super Drive" is actually the car's choke. In previous stories a letter 'C' can clearly been seen on the control knob. In reality, activating the "Super Drive" would probably flood the engine and stall the car.
  • These scenes were filmed at Old Church Lane, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire on 7th April 1972.
  • This is the first episode/story to feature the "hand-shaped" trafficator right-turn indicator.
 EPISODE 2

EPISODE 2 NOTES

  • Bessie appears in a scene near the beginning of the episode as the Doctor and Jo pull up in the courtyard of the Newton Institute.
  • There is also a brief scene later on in this episode when Sergeant Benton walks past Bessie on his way to the main house.
  • These scenes were filmed at Swallowfield Park, Swallowfield, Berkshire on 4th April 1972.
 EPISODE 3

EPISODE 3 NOTES

  • The Doctor rescues the Brigadier and other UNIT staff from the time dilation effect of TOMTIT.
  • The Doctor and Jo leave the Newton Institute. Bessie speeds off under Super-Drive.
  • Note that Bessie's position has changed, from outside the red brick part of the house in the previous scene, to in front of the pillared columns of the main entrance.
  • These scenes were filmed at Swallowfield Park, Swallowfield, Berkshire on 5th April 1972.
  • The Doctor and Jo join the Brigadier just as the V1 "Doodlebug" bomb explodes near the UNIT convoy.
  • Bessie en-route to the UNIT convoy was filmed on roads near Stratfield Saye, Hampshire on 7th April 1972.
 EPISODE 4

EPISODE 4 NOTES
