New Developments at Dragon Hall

Dragon Hall has been offered a grant of £1,362,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to complete the repair of the building. A new extension will be built with improved facilities and a new exhibition and display system installed. The total cost will be £1,836,311 and a final £72,000 must be raised towards the matching funding.

The Norfolk and Norwich Heritage Trust have managed the building for the past seventeen years, keeping it open to the public with the help of volunteers and a small number of staff.

There will be three main elements to the Dragon Hall project:-

  • Restoration of the existing buildings, including installation of heating system and a new floor in the hall.

  • Installation of exciting displays and interpretative media to tell the story of the building and its place in the history of the city and county.

  • Extensions to the building creating a glass link that will improve circulation around the hall and disabled access. A new north wing will be built with service rooms, modern facilities and a meeting room.

The Trust aims to make Dragon Hall an enjoyable experience for everyone that uses it, to help every visitor learn something new about it and to continue to care for the building to safeguard its future.

The project will have real and long lasting public benefits:-

  • An important historic building restored to a suitable and self-sustaining use.

  • A contribution towards the regeneration of the area.

  • An attractive venue for a wide range of events and educational activities.

  • An opportunity for local people to be involved with their heritage.

  • A contribution to the overall heritage of Norwich.

  • Helping children, the future guardians of our heritage, to learn about their past.

Work will start on site in May 2004 and the project will be completed in July 2005.
