Description:
The requirements for the combined IOMR/MNR/FR system, in particular the new Douglas/Ramsey route, meant that a larger design of locomotive than that already in service was necessary to maintain competition between the IOMR and the Manx Electric Railway.  The basic criterion was for an engine which could carry sufficient coal and water to run non-stop from Douglas to Ramsey.  The outcome from Beyer Peacock was simply an enlarged version of their 'standard' design.

Other than for the enlarged upright smokebox and enlarged boiler, tanks and bunker, a cursory glance at these new engines when new would not have revealed any differences of significance.  It would need closer inspection to identify the detailed changes which Beyer Peacock were now incorporating into their engines.  The driving and coupled wheels each had one extra spoke and a cast-in balance weight.  The larger pony truck, open motion bracket and larger crosshead introduced with Engine No.8 were carried over into the 'new' design.

Place the new engines next to their elder sister Douglas and they were quite simply "bigger" - longer, wider, taller.  Although dimensionally on paper there was not a great difference, visually they were much bigger.
