Design Changes - 1894
| No.8 FENELLA | Works No. 3610 | Built 1894 |
Description:
Some twenty-one years after delivery of the initial three IOMR
locomotives, the design remained virtually unchanged. With
the delivery of FENELLA, certain specifications became more akin
to the larger series of engines to be delivered a decade or so
later as No.'s 10 to 13. The pony truck was strengthened by
increasing the length of its side frames. The motion
bracket was changed to an open design, enabling easier servicing
and withdrawal of the crosshead / connecting rod assembly.
The crosshead itself was to a larger pattern, with larger
slippers and integral oil boxes to reduce wear. The front
and rear sanding gear became steam operated from the cab, with
the rear sand boxes moved from inside the top corners of the coal
bunker to beneath the footplate behind the cab steps. The
only other obvious change was a wheel replacing the outer
tightening handle of the smokebox door.
