Design Changes - 1896
| No. 9 DOUGLAS | Works No. 3815 | Built 1896 |

Description:
From photographic evidence (or lack thereof), a further design
change seems to have been incorporated into DOUGLAS with the deletion of the
external blower valve behind the chimney and its control
mechanism through the right-hand boiler handrail. As a
result, a continuous handrail starting from the cab on one side,
proceeding high along the boiler cladding, then round the top of
the smokebox front plate and back to the cab on the other side
was fitted. The blower valve became situated centrally on
the backhead inside the cab, steam being fed by a pipe from
inside the dome, a separate delivery pipe being routed internally
through the boiler to the smokebox tubeplate and from there to a
chimney blower pipe.
Specification Changes:
| Blower valve/Control: | Internal through Boiler |
| Handrails: Boiler/Smokebox |
Continuous High Level - 7 Stanchions |
