Growing
Up
If you
read my tale about the fish food, then this is what they call a sequel.
Having
mastered the technique of 'scooping' the fish food from the surface
of the pond, it became a regular feature of my day - food is always
high on my agenda and free offerings are never missed.
This
year the boss had placed a long wooden pole across one side of the pond
to deter the Heron from stepping into the pond and eating the fish.
Sensible really since if the fish are eaten then there would be no need
to feed them.
This
wooden pole, however, was flat on the bottom and curved on the top,
and made a perfect platform to place ones front paws on, thus placing
me closer to the floating fish food.
This
year the fish seem a little larger than last year and more boisterous
too.
I don't
like water being splashed on me so whenever the fish swirl the water,
having snatched a piece of fish food, they flick their tails on the
surface and create a splash - nasty.
Being
a brave little border terrier I try to jump back quickly to avoid getting
an unwelcome soaking.
On one
particular occasion, some weeks ago, the food had been scattered on
the water and the boss had gone back indoors. I took up my usual pose
with paws on the pole ready to eat any food that drifted my way. Up
came one of the larger fish to take some food and brave little me was
coiled like a spring ready to jump back onto the safety of the lawn.
When
the splash came I pushed off from the pole in my usual manner but hadn't
quite got my footing right - I slipped.
Now
that was a splash.
In I
went - completely. No one there to help me. Panic!!!!!!!!
Fortunately
the pond is not too deep at the edges and In my blind panic I managed
to scramble out.
Talk
about embarrassed. I was wet and smelly - and I hadn't managed to get
any fish food.
I have
now given up this foolish escapade and stand my distance at fish feeding
time. There are better ways of getting wet - like prowling in the rain.
I know the boss will
feed me so who needs fish food?
