NE NLCOG - Why the web site is so simple
The NE NLCOG home page is not the most advanced page you will find on the Internet. It has few graphics, has a simple backdrop, no Flash programs or Java applets, and doesn't use Frames or CSS.
I kept the image content of the pages down to a minimum as I don't like having to wait for graphically intense web pages to download as it costs money and, more importantly, it is annoying. I designed the web site to be able to run on all types and specifications of computer and to be downloaded quickly on a 56K modem connection as I know not everyone has access to a +1GHz machine connected to a T1 10Mb/s connection.
You won't find Frames or CSS for one major reason: compatibility. Frames is well supported but CSS is not. Not even the current version of Opera supports CSS fully and I know there are many people out there using older browsers which just can't support these formats. Its not that I can't program these, I just wanted the maximum amount of people to be able to read and use my site without any hassle, basically because I want as many people as possible to join the NE NLCOG! Its not nice being told that your browser doesn't support something and not being able to look at the web site, especially when you have just spent the last 10 minutes or more waiting for it to download.
I hope you agree with me. If you find any problems or compatibility issues with this web page then please contact me telling me what the problem is and your machine and browser specifications and I'll do my best to correct it.
Browsers tested
Currently I've only tested four browsers, these are listed below. Although Mozilla is a large download it is well worth it. You can also usually find a version of Mozilla freely availible on many PC cover discs. I hope to test more browsers in the future. I do not have access to any Macs so if you find problems with browsers running on a Mac then please contact me and provide me with all the details of the problem you can and I'll see what I can do.
Opera v6.0, v6.03
Netscape v4.75, v6.1
Mozilla v1.0, v1.1
Internet Explorer v5.0
Known problems
Netscape v4.75 and Explorer v5.0 do not display the small gif format navigation graphics correctly as the browsers display their backgrounds as white when, in fact, their backgrounds are transparent.
Possible problems
The web site was designed to be viewed at a resolution of 1024x768 at 32bit colour. I thought this was resonable for most computers. As far as I can see there are no problems with the site when changing screen resolutions however this does not mean that there will be any!
