Tuscania is a small vibrant town (population around 8,000) full of restaurants, cafes, shops and bars. Tourists come to look at the town's Etruscan tombs, medieval streets and Renaissance architecture but also to visit the nearby beaches (on the coast and at Lake Bolsena) or to relax beside the town's open air pool. Tuscania is also a good base to visit Tuscany (Florence, Siena and the Chianti wine region), Rome or Umbria..

The town is situated in the centre of the Viterbian Tuscia, between lake Bolsena and the Tirrenian coast at Tarquinia and Montalto di Castro.  The lake is 15 km to the North, and is surrounded by hills of volcanic origin. To the south-west 25km of Maremman hills separate the town from the sea. Tuscania consists of a historic walled old town, and the new town, which is situated outside the old walls.

Visit the Basilica up on the hill, acclimatise yourselves by walking around the inside of the city walls, sit in the park and take in the beautiful views. Although it is a small town Tuscania has much to offer. Shops on Via Roma in the old town include a bakery, small grocery shop, wine shop, book/stationery shop, shoe shop, boutique and a wonderful chocolate and coffee shop. There is also a pharmacy, tobacconist and a cake and pastry shop on Via Cavour. The closest cash point machine is at Banca di Roma, just outside the city gate. There are also two well-stocked supermarkets in the new town. The town has about six café/bars, at least eight restaurants, and even has a gym and indoor pool in the new town.

The apartment itself sleeps a maximum of six. It has a fully fitted kitchen, with oven, hob and fridge freezer. It has two double bedrooms, and the sofa-bed in the living room converts into a double bed. The courtyard area is shared with the other residents. Some Survival Tips

Use the Ufficio Informazioni Turistiche – most towns have one, and they offer free city maps and advice. There are also guide books and local maps in the apartment, please feel free to borrow these.   All shops in Italy close for Siesta from around 1pm until 4pm, so shop in the morning and sightsee in the afternoon ! Most shops are closed on Sunday, and many shut on Wednesday afternoons too. The IperCoop at Viterbo is open on Sundays and is an excellent place to shop for food. While visiting the supermarket don't forget to stock up on lots of bottled water. The local water is not safe, so avoid ice in your drinks too.
Be prepared to tip (15%-20%) everywhere. Café/bars will charge you more if you sit down! They may provide table service, and you will not be expected to pay until you leave. Be prepared to haggle, even smaller clothes shops will be prepared to drop their prices if it means making a sale.
