This Grade II listed cottage, dating from the late 18th century, is approached through St Mary's churchyard in Kirkby Lonsdale and enjoys superb views over the Lune Valley. Leased by the Vivat Trust, the cottage had been empty since 1988 and was in rapidly deteriorating condition.
It's rescue is a textbook piece of renovation. Every detail has been considered and great care has been taken to ensure the repair and renovation work is both historically correct and immaculately finished. The cottage's entrance gate repeats the rise and fall arrangement of the latches on the churchyard gate. The detailing of the balustrades and handrail to the first floor balconies has been handled with authority. The repairs won a Civil Trust Award.
The cottage is being used as holiday accommodation and its setting is being enhanced by extensive landscaping and planting of the terraced gardens.
