Under the enlightened leadership of Canon Gervase Markham the Eden Millennium Festival Committee wished to erect an appropriate monument to commemorate the Millennium.
A fifty tonne block of granite was selected from a quarry near Shap, and Blackett-Ord Consulting Engineers were appointed as civil engineering consultants for moving the rock and setting it in its final position at Eamont Bridge, some ten miles away from the quarry.
The rock is founded on a concrete raft, to which it is doweled with steel reinforcing bars. After installation it was carved with Alpha, Omega, 2000 and a cross.
