Charles Blackett-Ord is Consulting Civil and Structural Engineer for Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
The Cathedral, the third largest in Europe, was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1904 and 1978. It is of gothic design and is constructed in loadbearing brickwork with sandstone facing; the main modern material to distinguish it from its mediaeval forebears is the use of concrete in the upper floors and roofs, which might otherwise have been of timber.
Structural issues that are being addressed include the condition of the concrete, which dates from various periods from the 1920's to the 1970's and which is in some cases in poor condition.
