The community
that's nearly 4,000 years old
and still young at heart
Ashbrittle
is a parish of 2155 acres lying in the south west of Somerset.
To the south and west the parish borders Devon. To the east lies
Stawley and the history of both parishes are closely allied. The
main part of the parish
is some 640 feet above sea level. The
current
population is about 215 souls.
Many outlying houses are of antiquity, with Waldrons, Tucks and Hagley
Bridge farms all having jointed cruck roof timbers, indicating survivals
of houses in continuous habitation since mediæval days.
Now without a pub, the village has had several licensed houses over the
years. Today, those who want a pint
of ale and a meal go to the nearby
Globe at Appley
in Stawley.
