Art Appeciation

Since the last report, we've had just two meetings. At Easter, Tom Stimpson kindly invited us to his home in Birchfield Road - for an informal cuppa, as I thought: in fact, a full scale meeting + delicious snacks + a chance to see many of Tom's own watercolours. In May, Morgan Morison chose 'Landscape' as a topic and in particular the work of John Piper (1903-1992). Piper - a painter and printmaker, was Morgan told us, British through and through: his subjects were British landscapes, buildings and in particular churches. Often, he did ink drawings overlaid with screenprinted reds or greens - no people - he said "Buildings are people things". Piper was an official war artist in WW2, and designed the stained glass for Coventry cathedral.
At the same meeting Tom and Margaret Hornby showed portfolios of their work ranging from local scenes to watercolours of Avignon. Tom gave us some compositional clues. I had lapsed into thinking artists painted what was in front of them - Tom put us right on this. He told us adjustments he had made included lopping intrusive trees down to half-size - I think this virtual gardening could catch on, possibly in our garden later in the summer.
By the time you read this (and thanks for staying with me so far) Sheila Johnson will have introduced us to Hans Holbein (1497-1543) court painter to Henry VIII: best known picture "The Ambassadors". After this, we're off until September. This should give us time to
(a) visit Tate Liverpool, "This is Sculpture" - 4 galleries but top-floor is; a knockout - people. some of them real highlights, dance music in your headphones - and an underlit dance floor for U3A partying.
(b) visit the Whitworth ; "Putting on the Glitz" : stylish wallcoverings. Also The Manchester Indian': silks and saris.
(c) visit Manchester City Art Gallery: from 26.9.09: "Angels of Anarchy; Women Artists and Surrealism". £6. See you there ?
