The calendar said that summer was getting nearer and at the time we believed it. So it was time to take a long summer break from our studies. Some of our members may be called on to carry out grandparent duties but it is still a time when, hopefully, a visit to Italy can be made and our hard earned knowledge of the language can be put to use. Various problems may be met. In the northern parts of Italy we are often mistaken for Germans and Italians will speak German. This is not surprising as we perhaps look alike and it is a popular haunt for the German on holiday. I have often seen a German arrive at a hotel driving a very expensive Mercedes/BMW. And with a trailer carrying an also expensive, BMW motorcycle. They obviously had not had the advice which was given by a coach driver; an Englishman living in Italy with his Italian wife; "The Italians are lovely people but when they get behind the steering wheel they want to kill everybody" There may be some truth in this as I once sat outside a bar after visiting the ruins at Herculaneum and every passing car had some sort of damage. This included police cars. A second problem is that very often waiters and staff in hotels and restaurants want to practice their English as their livelihood depends on it. Thirdly it is time to find out if our Italian resembles in any way the language spoken by Italians. A former member of our group once said "I can understand Italian spoken by an Englishman but not spoken by an Italian." However most Italians are delighted if you try to use their language and will willingly help you to correct your mistakes. "The Italians are lovely people but .. " For information about our meeting venue and times, give me a ring.
