Language learning aids

BROADCASTS - some ways to see and hear foreign language broadcasts

  1. If you have Sky Digital Satellite TV
    1. The FRENCH television channel TV5 can be seen on Sky Channel 805*.
    2. The GERMAN television channel DW-TV can be seen on Sky Channel 801*
      - Transmits programmes in various languages including German.
    3. The SPANISH television channel TVEi can be seen on Sky Channel 802*.
    4. The sound commentary on the EuroNews channel, Sky channel 509*, can be heard in French, German, ITALIAN, Spanish or other selected language by setting your "Favourite Language" using Sky's on-screen menus as follows:-
      • Press the oval button "Services"
      • Select 4 - "SYSTEM SETUP"
      • Select 3 - "LANGUAGE AND SUBTITLES"
      • Select "FAVOURITE LANGUAGE/AUDIO" (select your language with the right-arrow)
      • Save Your Settings (IMPORTANT)
      • Press Backup. EuroNews sound commentary will now be heard in your "favourite language".


      • *The channel numbers are subject to frequent change.
        You can search for the foreign channels by selecting TV Guide>0 >International.

  2. Internet Radio/TV
    Most web sites with audio-visual material expect you to have either "Real Player" or "Windows Media Player". Both these players are available free on the web and may already be built in to your system.
    The following language broadcast links are have been correct for some time, but contents change frequently:
    • French (France Inter -> direct)
    • German (on the far right-hand-side -> DW-Radio -> radio live)
    • Italian (Satel Radio Live/Hotbird live ).
    • Spanish (TVE/RNE -> 'en directo').


    • A fast connection is advisable for audio and essential for video.

Google Browser Toolbar On-line Translator

Google has a 'toolbar' that installs in Internet Explorer and Firefox internet browsers. The toolbar has options in which you can enable the 'word translator' and select your language. The effect is that when you are browsing online and the cursor is over a word, its translation hovers above it.
