Report from Warrington U3A Magazine, Spring, 2008
February again and a note is required to record what the maths group has been doing this year. Well that's a (non-mathematical) problem, because we don't appear to do very much except think sometimes and talk (a lot). Admittedly, the talk is mostly maths related but we aim to keep it light-hearted.
Our numbers have lately increased by 33% (i.e. we were three and now we are four!)
They say that a mathematician's best work is done at an early age ...that's all right then, because we don't really work either! If you fancy joining the group, we meet at my home in Appleton, at 10am on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, when we mostly amuse ourselves with puzzles of a mathematical nature, with an occasional meander into more serious matters!

Here are a couple of puzzles which I hope you will enjoy and not find too frustrating!

  • PUZZLE I
(Two wrongs CAN make a right!) The letters in this sum each stand for a different digit. Find the value of each letter so that the sum itself is correct:-
     WRONG + WRONG = RIGHT

  • PUZZLE 2
A fair coin has equal chances of showing a head or a tail on landing. Two identical fair coins are tossed and allowed to fall onto a tabletop. What is the probability that they land showing different sides?
