Music Appreciation

|Home| |Timetable|

Our meeting in June closed the year to 2009 for our group; but what a finale! People sometimes ask "Is Music Appreciation all Classical? - Beethoven, Mozart and that?" If they had attended in June, they would have realised, anything but! We always finish the season with a "pot-pourri" - members bring in their choice of music to share with one another, just something they enjoy because it's worth listening to. This time, we started with the lovely, peaceful song "The Long Day Closes". This was my choice - male voice choirs always send a shiver down my spine! Then Margaret played us two delightful wind ensemble pieces by Grieg. Colin's choice brought some civic pride -"On Falla" composed and played by Steven Hough, the world-renowned pianist from Warrington. A clever title this - the double "L" in "Falla", when pronounced in the Spanish way, makes "Falla" sound almost like "Fire", and the composition has echoes of "Ritual Fire Dance".
On then to Ruth's choice, Gershwin - three of his unforgettable tunes, and then Pat surprised us with "Oxygene 'V", composed and played on a synthesiser by Jean Michel Jarre - that made us sit up! lt put us "In the Mood" for Pauline's choice of Genn Miller. Two film scores followed, chosen by Wendy and Betty -"Dances With Wolves" and "Ladies in Lavender".
Then another contrast - Marian chose Chris Barber and Otilie Patterson "I Wish I Could :Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" (Don't we all?). Brenda's choice of Lloyd-Webber's "Pie Jesu" sung by The Priests calmed us down, and we listened to Faryl Smith singing to Strauss' "Blue Danube", and some trad jazz from Louis Armstrong finishing with Tom's choice from Shostakovich's Jazz Suite. A wonderful feast!
We meet next on Thursday September 3rd, at 1.30 in the Masonic Rooms. At that meeting, we'll set our programme for the year, If you would like to join us, give me a ring.
