We always seem to include something about Shakespeare in our programme - after all he is the greatest playwright the world has ever known. During our 2008-9 season we watched videos of the third and fourth of Michael Wood's series In search of Shakespeare. Derek Meakin and Jackie Starkey were our guest speakers; Derek gave us the historical facts about Mark Antony and Jackie discussed the play Antony and Cleopatra. From the 20th century we compared The Deep Blue Sea and Look Back in Anger and had a session on Educating Rita by Willy Russell. We had a presentation on the Rise and Fall of Television Drama - very timely in view of recent comments in the press.
Our talk on Gilbert & Sullivan was illustrated with a scrapbook, proving that some of our members have trodden the boards. We were not too parochial however. Members researched Alexander Ostrovsky, the major Russian dramatist of the 19th century, the Czech theatre with particular reference to the plays of Vaclav Havel, and Sophie Treadwell, a distinguished American playwright of the 20th century, little known outside her own country. We had a visit backstage to the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, and a winter lunch.
The coming season's programme is even more varied - radio plays, amateur drama, the purpose of theatre, Henrik Ibsen, Dennis Potter, history of British theatre, docudrama, more American theatre, and an in-depth study of Shakespeare's The Tempest, led by Jackie Starkey- what a mouth-watering prospect! Can you resist?
We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, starting Sept 2nd, in the Lourge at Bold Street Methodists. Please ring for further information.
