When visiting our grand-daughter at University in Egham, we went to the morning service at St. John's Church and heard a very interesting story as part of the sermon. "A young man had an ambition to become an airline pilot and so joined the U.S. Airforce but discovered that his eyesight was not good enough to fly a plane. "One day when sitting in his garden he had an idea. He would tie balloons filled with helium to his deck chair and attach it to his car. When the car moved the chair would fly upwards. So arming himself with his son's popgun with which to 'pop' the balloons when he was airborne, he, set off. But he quickly rose to thousands of feet in the air and was too afraid to shoot down the balloons. A plane was scrambled but couldn't help; however, eventually, when he had been blown over the sea, a helicopter managed to fly over him and he was rescued. Safely on the ground, he was arrested and put into handcuffs. When asked why he did it, he replied, "You can't just sit there".
Is there a message in that remark for us all? Is it to go out and fulfil your ambition before it is too late?
In the Travel Club we talk about experiences on holidays we have had. We've had a single man who ended up on a holiday on his own in Switzerland and not missing anything, and one lady who met up with a friend in India and experienced many interesting things in the weeks she was there. We've had talks on River Cruises and sailing round the Greek islands as a competent crew member, Christmas in Nepal and our chosen Cities. We have also had visiting speakers on Vietnam, Peru and Galapagos.
Next year we look forward to sharing more of our experiences, so don't "just sit there" join us - you will be most welcome. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Lounge at Bold Street at 10.30 am. We are planning next year's programme at the first meeting in September, which wiII be on the 15th.
