Walking

I am sure all the group would like me to thank John Homer and Paul Roberts (and Rita and Wendy) for their 10 years of hard work as group leaders. Bob Prescott and I (Alan Broadbent!) took over in the spring and hope to continue the development of our very large group (over 150 at present). We are assisted by our committee - Nina, Ken, Pat, Dilys and Barbara -who are full of bright ideas!
The annual holiday last October at the 'Peveril of the Peak' hotel at Thorpe, Derbyshire, was again very successfully organised by Bob and Pauline Prescott, with excellent accommodation and a good variety of walks. The highlights for me on the longer walks were tackling the extreme mud in the Musden Wood Valley (where we would have been way over our boots if we hadn't decided to scramble round the trees up the steep valley sides), and the end of our walk from Waterhouses, at the 'Collectors Pub of the Year' - the Yew Tree at Cauldon. The beers were much appreciated, and the publican playing the pianola for our singsong was a fitting climax to our visit to this unique hostelry! We are going to the same hotel for our holiday in early October this year - phone Bob to check if there are any places left.
During the last six months our walks have covered the usual wide range of places and terrains from Shropshire to North Lancashire, Yorkshire to North Wales, with many Cheshire walks in between, particularly for the shorter walks. The current programme runs until the end of September 2009, by which time the programme for the following 6 months will have been decided at the planning meeting in early September.
